Can you imagine a certain day when exciting news is flashed in the neighborhood: “Joe and Susie’s baby is born!”
The new parents would have choked with high praises and congratulatory messages. But when these excitements subsided, they began to feel afraid...and why wouldn't they? They've already embarked on a new challenge --- on how to care of their new baby!
Yes, taking care of a new baby is both a challenge and a dilemma for new parents. Inadequate parenting skills, or the lack of it, is viewed as a vital factor in some infant illnesses, or worst, of infants’ accidental deaths. Government regulations make it mandatory for the newlywed couples to attend seminars on parenting skills. These are also aimed to develop confidence and values among the parents, foremost in mind, that a new baby has his rights, and he needs the care of the parents.
The good news is that it is quite simple to take care of babies, including the newborn.
Big industries have discovered that parenting skills could be taught through the labels of baby products, and in helping these parents, these companies become partners in caring for the new babies. So you see, these new parents are basically never alone.
Below are some tips on how new parents can take care of their new babies:
The skin is irritated by urine or stool. In the case of irritation by diarrhea, the latter causes the acid in the alcohol to burn the skin. This can be prevented by ensuring that urine is well absorbed by the diaper, the stool must be dry, and an immediate change is needed when the diaper becomes wet.
Preventing flat spots on the heads
New parents must understand that the babies’ weak muscles force them to turn their heads to one side when placed on their backs. This will result to flat spots on the heads because the babies’ skulls are very soft and the bones can be affected by pressure, especially if they remained on the same position for a longer time. Getting a flat head can be prevented by constantly changing the position of the baby. Since babies tend to look at interesting objects, you may either change the position of the crib, or the object of interest.
Sleeping environment
Ensure that the baby has a good sleeping habit by placing him in an environment conducive to sleeping, such as the right room, right sleeping position, the kind of crib and so on. Further, let the baby sleep on his back to make night-time breastfeeding easier and prevent crib death.
Bathing your baby
A full bath is alright for a new baby. If you will use soap, make sure it is mild and unscented. Then rinse the baby well to prevent irritation.
New parents must strive to learn more parenting skills to ensure their baby’s welfare. Having mastered them, I think another new baby will again stir excitement, this time without fear :)
